I Got My Foot in the Door and Got the Film Jobs I Want
Once concentrated almost completely in the souther part of California, film jobs and film internships have become much more common across the country as production continues to migrate to “third coast” areas. With increasing film production now taking place in various placements all over the United States, the need for skill around the country has risen significantly. Southern California, in the past the virtually exclusive domain of Film and TV production does, on the other hand, goes on to be a primary hub of the industry. The most well-sought professional people – editors, actors, writers, directors – are still in the LA area. On another note, because several critically heralded cable TV series have been using New York as their home base, the city witnessed an increase in production. The city also maintains a sustainable level of commercial and feature film production. The “third coast” locations, situated between the coasts, has been a wholly new era in feature film production. Over the last ten years, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida – also called gulf states – have seen a significant growth in production. While these projects generally bring in essential people, the need for locally employed production crew has taken a big jump. As such, there has been a big increase in the amount of film jobs available all along the gulf coast. Accordingly, the very area has an exaggerated claim for film talent.
Other major metropolitan regions such as Chicago, Minneapolis as well as San Francisco have also established themselves as film production giants. For example, TV drama, “The Beast” (featuring the late Patrick Swayze) and better film production “The Dark Knight” have been the filmed in Chicago. While not totally “recession-proof,” the film business has shown itself to be specially strong during past times of economic turmoil. During difficult times, the public seeks wishful thinker kinds of entertainment like those heard in TV and movies. The fact that production has embraced the digital age also caused a boost in demand for talent. Today, the demand has never been greater as film production has been taking place virtually anywhere and in new ways. In the same way that films need new directors and authors, the industry also needs new actors. This makes way for the growth in need of “below-the-line” skill in important production roles. As you are aware, sound people, grips, cinematographers, art directors, and lights men are valuable to whatever film production. The need for these skilled, trained professional people to join film jobs and film internships in new media and in new areas shall proceed to rise as long as film production continues to migrate from the coasts and branch out.
